Yesterday I was reading Computer Arts magazine (issue 183) and there was an article about this (free) iPhone app called Visualator. It’s simple app for abstract imagery and I’ve found it very enjoyable especially used together with some photo apps like, Camera+, PS Express or Mill Colour.

Visualator is made by Computer Arts, Matt Booth and Stewart Hamilton-Arrandale. Here’s also a tutorial from Computer Arts

The Sketchbook Project is a really interesting concept…you sign up, receive sketchbook, do whatever you like, send it back and then all sketchbooks are exhibited at galleries and museums on tour around the USA. I had a chance to see some sketchbooks live and it was really inspiring to see how much effort people put in to these sketchbooks!

I’m definitely going to participate next year!

I really recommend you to check these out on tour or visit The Brooklyn Art Library if you have a chance!

Now that I’ve lived in Sweden about a year now I’ve noticed many nice packages at local grocery stores. Quite many of those are organic products but there’s also some non-organic products with nice packages. I guess these packaging designs has a major impact on buying decision…at least it has effected my decisions. My girlfriend also said that she could buy many of these products even if she doesn’t need them, but just because of the design and beautiful package.

By the way, here in Sweden organic products are not so much more expensive than non-organic products if you compare to e.g. Finland.

Today I was at the IKEA with my girlfriend and we found this set of beautiful art cards by Maria Holmer Dahlgren. This 5 piece set represents some Swedish cities and regions.

Holmer Dahlgren has designed these kind of graphics not only for some Swedish cities and regions but also for e.g. London and Helsinki. Her graphics can be found e.g. on trays, dishcloths and teatowels. Holmer Dahlgren herself considers these products as “personal battle against tacky souvenirs that has no soul.”

I’m applying to be an exchange student in Kwantlen University Vancouver next spring. My DD colleague Kalle was at the same school as an exchange couple of years ago so Kwantlen was a pretty obvious choice. The hardest part of the whole applying process was to make a portfolio that’ll satisfy me. I worked on it last couple of weeks and finally got it printed. Here are some photos of its spreads.

We did a music video for a band called Five Minutes For Myself. We decided to show you some more screenshots we took during the project in Apple Motion so you can see how the look changed pretty much before it got ready.

The very first 5 second draft.

Mercury Web Browser Pro VS Safari for iPhone

We found out that no one has really compared Mercury Web Browser Pro with Safari for iPhone, so we decided to take a closer look at those.

Safari

I think everyone who uses iPhone knows Safari and how it works. It has a quite nice interface with bookmarks and simple buttons, but there’s not much space for customizing. There’s one thing I don’t like in Safari. All the settings are in iPhone Settings, not in Safari itself. When you want to change something you have to quit surfing and go to Settings.

Safari doesn’t use tabs, it uses pages. There’s a button where you can browse through your current web pages which you can have open 8 at the same time. It works, but in some way it is a bit hard to use. I think it’s not that useful way to open several sites on different pages at the same time than using tabs. We’ve got so used to tabs in desktop browsers nowadays so it feels like going back to 90’s when opening a new page.

As we said earlier you can use bookmarks in Safari. Yep, that’s one of the best and the most workable features of Safari. You can sync them with iTunes so they keep in order and you get easily all the latest bookmarks to your mobile browser as well.

There’s pretty dominant navigation bar on the bottom of the display and even bigger address bar on top of it. They make the area for actual web site view quite small.

One thing has made me crazy so many times that I can’t understand why Apple hasn’t added the feature later. And it’s the rotation lock. When you browse web for example on the bed on your side, Safari flips always the screen view in the wrong way. That’s a big minus for Safari.

Mercury Web Browser Pro

Mercury Web Browser Pro, or let’s just call it Mercury, is a quite new app for us even if the latest version is already 2.4. It’s made by iLegendSoft Inc and the Pro version costs 0.79€ ($0.99). There is also a free version of Mercury with fewer possibilities of personalizing and customizing. We recommend the Pro version.

iLegendsoft promote Mercury as “Fast fullscreen browser with tabs”. It tells you a lot of it. I love the possibility to surf in fullscreen. Web pages just look so much better in big size on the iPhone screen. In the bottom of the screen is a transparent and customizable menu bar with little icons. You can choose for example from back & forward buttons, search (yes, you can search inside the web page!) and new tab & close tab buttons.

One thing that just sucks is that you can’t set Mercury as your default browser. Apple gives you a possibility to use different browsers but all the web links in other apps like Mail etc open in Safari.

The settings are in the app itself. You can easily go to settings while browsing and after saving changes you’re back in business after few “clicks”.

Mercury has also a rotation lock. You can turn it on from the settings. No more frustration with unwanted flipping screens!

You can import bookmarks also to Mercury but syncing via iTunes doesn’t work at all. Importing is also a bit complicated but can be managed after a little struggle. The way you use bookmarks can be switched between normal and springboard styles.

Scroll bar is also a nice feature especially when you’re browsing through a long page.

Actually one of the reasons we got interested in Mercury at the first place was its speed. That’s why we wanted to find out how fast it really is. So we took a stopwatch and started surfing. Here are the results:

It’s time to show you guys a sneak peek from the cover art project we finally finished just a while ago. The album which is named as Come See Us Alive! is from a band called Five Minutes For Myself and it’s their debut.

The project started as always, with a little brain storming. After getting marvelous ideas we ended up to the studio to have a photo shoot. Here’s some of the frames we got:

After the photo shoot started furious masking/clipping in Photoshop to get rid of the backgrounds. Fortunately FMFM ain’t representing the genre of hair metal ’cause masking of the big fluffy 80’s hair would be pain in the designer’s ass.

As strange as it sounds we decided to do cover design with Apple Motion for a couple of reasons. Mainly because we wanted a nice and flexible 3D environment with realistic lighting and shadows. We are also doing an animated ad from the same material so choosing Apple Motion was a pretty easy decision. There was some concern about Motion having too small resolution for print design and that’s why we also considered Apple Shake. After a couple print tests and some calculation we were certain about sufficient resolution in Motion.

Max resolution in Motion is 2048px x 2048px and the size for digipak cd cover is 139,5mm x 125,5mm (approx. 5,49″ x 4,94″ who knows about these inches…) in 300ppi. So if you calculate 2048px/300ppi=6,83″ it means 2048px is enough for 6,83″ x 6,83″. Here’s a good site we found during research http://www.design215.com/toolbox/megapixels.php. Lots of information about megapixels and print sizes.

That’s enough about geeky stuff. Here’s a little early draft from Apple Motion:
